Overview

Acton sits just west of Canberra’s CBD, framed by Black Mountain and the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin. The Australian National University dominates the suburb, so the 2,848 residents recorded in the 2021 census are largely students living on‑campus or in the New Acton precinct that grew around Acton House between 2006 and 2019. Cultural attractions include the National Museum of Australia on the Acton Peninsula, the National Film and Sound Archive in the former Institute of Anatomy, and the ANU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Trail that recalls millennia of Indigenous presence.

Residents enjoy a compact urban mix of research facilities, cafés and green space. Within a few hundred metres are the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering, the John Curtin School of Medical Research, the ANU Law School and the historic R G Menzies Building, while the Acton Tunnel links the suburb to Parkes Way for easy car access. Ongoing works at the Acton Waterfront, starting with Henry Rolland Park in 2018 and a new boardwalk completed in 2022, are expanding lakeside recreation and strengthening connections to New Acton.
