Acton, ACT 2601
Overview
Acton sits just west of Canberra’s central business district, framed by Black Mountain and the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin. The Australian National University dominates the suburb, and the 2021 census recorded 2,848 residents, the majority of whom are students. A compact urban feel is enhanced by New Acton, a purpose‑built precinct around Acton House that was rolled out between 2006 and 2019.
Cultural highlights include the National Museum of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive and the growing Acton Waterfront, where Henry Rolland Park and a new boardwalk opened in 2022 and will evolve into a full neighbourhood by 2028. Road connectivity is provided by the Acton Tunnel, completed in 1979 as part of the Parkes Way extension, linking the suburb to the CBD and nearby research facilities.
