Acton sits just west of Canberra’s CBD, bounded by Black Mountain and Lake Burley Griffin. Dominated by the Australian National University, it offers a vibrant student lifestyle with cultural sites such as the National Film and Sound Archive, the National Museum of Australia and the New Acton precinct, a purpose‑built urban area around Acton House developed from 2006‑2019. The 2021 census recorded 2,848 residents, the majority of whom are ANU students, creating a youthful, research‑focused community.
