Banks sits at the southern edge of Canberra’s Tuggeranong district, bordered by Box Hill Avenue, Tom Roberts Avenue and Tharwa Drive and neighboured by Conder and Gordon. Gazetted in March 1987 and named after botanist Sir Joseph Banks, the suburb’s streets follow a botany‑inspired theme and its terrain gently slopes west‑northwest toward the foothills of Canberra Nature Park. To the east lie the Rob Roy Nature Reserve with Mt Rob Roy and the smaller Big Monks hill, which offers a gliding stage for paragliders and hang‑gliders that soar over the area.
