Overview

Bruce, a suburb of Canberra’s Belconnen district, was gazetted in 1968 and named for former Prime Minister Viscount Bruce. At the 2021 census the population was 7,520, with 58 % Australian‑born and communities from China, India and Nepal. Housing is varied: just over one‑fifth are separate houses, nearly half are townhouses or terraces, and a third are apartments, suiting families, students and downsizers.

Major amenities include the University of Canberra (over 10,000 students), the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra Stadium, the International Sports and Aquatic Centre, Calvary Public Hospital and the Canberra Institute of Technology campus. Public transport is strong, with bus routes R2, R3 and R4 serving the hospital, Radford College and the university, while route R9 links to the Gungahlin light rail at Dickson. Cycle paths connect Bruce to the Inner North, Belconnen Town Centre and Kaleen.
