Garema Place is a paved pedestrian plaza in Civic, Canberra’s CBD, lined with shops, restaurants and cafés that spill onto outdoor tables. The area is dotted with local public artworks, most notably “The Cushion and the Wedge” and the “Big Swoop” magpie sculpture, and serves as the venue for the city’s Multicultural Festival in February and Celebrate Canberra Festival in March.

Situated beside the three‑storey Canberra Centre (the former Monaro Mall) and only a short stroll from Vernon Circle, City Hill park and the Canberra Theatre, the plaza grew on the site of the disused Civic Centre railway station after it was removed in 1952. Recent paving works (Nov 2024 – Dec 2025) are further sharpening the pedestrian link between Garema Place and the historic City Walk corridor.
