Edkins Street runs through Downer’s leafy inner‑north precinct, bordered by the major arteries of Northbourne Avenue, Antill Street and Philip Avenue. The streetscape is framed by the large pine and gum trees planted in the 1930s as a windbreak for the former CSIRO research facility, and the newer gum plantings that are gradually replacing the ageing Camden Woolybutt specimens along nearby Swinden Street.

The residential houses that line Edkins Street have been built since the suburb’s gazettal in 1960, and residents enjoy easy access to the local oval bounded by Frencham, Melba, Bonython and Bradfield Streets, a refurbished shopping centre with a café and veterinary clinic, and the bronze kangaroo sculpture unveiled in 2019. Public transport is convenient, with Swinden Street Metro station just 0.8 km away and the Dickson Interchange within a kilometre, while the Dickson Centre, library and playing fields are all within walking distance.
