Overview

Symonston, named after constitutional framer Sir Josiah Symon, is a primarily industrial and agricultural suburb on Canberra’s southern fringe. The area retains a ‘Broadacre’ rural character while hosting large institutional sites such as Geoscience Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration and Defence‑related facilities. Under the Canberra Spatial Plan the suburb forms part of an emerging employment corridor linking Canberra Airport and the commercial hub of Fyshwick.
