The name Allawah is Aboriginal, meaning “make your abode here”. The first land grant was made in 1808, the railway line opened in 1884, the station opened on 23 October 1925 and the post office began service in May 1933.

In 2021, Allawah had 5,351 residents, with 34.6 % born in Australia. The community is culturally diverse, with notable percentages born in China (16 %) and Nepal (12.2 %), and a range of languages spoken at home.
