Perched 775 m above sea level on the western side of the Great Dividing Range, Batlow’s cool, snowy winters and high rainfall support its celebrated apple orchards, which supply roughly 10 % of the national crop. Community life centres on seasonal festivals such as the May Ciderfest and October Apple Blossom Festival, while seasonal workers arrive each spring for harvest and thinning.

The town offers two primary schools, a high school, a library with a telecentre, a community hall and several local stores. The Batlow Fruit Co‑operative, operating since 1922, anchors the economy, and the historic railway from Tumut once facilitated trade. Residential housing includes typical homes, though the 2020 bushfire destroyed at least 17 houses and community facilities.
