Bourke sits on the south bank of the Darling River, about 800 km north‑west of Sydney, and serves as the principal service hub for north‑western New South Wales. In the 2021 Census the town recorded 1,535 residents, with 35.7 % identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and 73 % born in Australia. Its hot semi‑arid climate brings very hot summers and cool winters, while the historic streets are flanked by heritage‑listed sites such as the North Bourke Bridge, St Ignatius Church and the former courthouse, giving the town a distinctive blend of period architecture and newer homes.
