Overview
Capertee is a small village 46 km north of Lithgow in New South Wales, perched on an 808‑metre‑high plateau above the Capertee Valley. At the 2021 Census the township had just 130 residents, many of whom work in coal mining, farming or tourism‑related services. The Castlereagh Highway runs through the centre, linking the town with Lithgow to the south and Mudgee to the north, while a historic railway line still passes the village although the station is closed.
The village offers a public school, police station, bush‑fire brigade hall, community hall, the Royal Hotel pub, a combined garage‑shop‑post office and two fibro churches. A monthly market at the Royal Hotel adds to the close‑knit feel. Surrounded by national parks and grazing land, Capertee attracts bird‑watchers and walkers, with Pearson’s Lookout two kilometres south providing valley vistas. Homes sit within the village amid farmland, delivering a rural lifestyle with direct highway access.
