Coonabarabran, called ‘Coona’, is a town of 2,387 residents (2021 Census) on the divide between New South Wales’ Central West and North West Slopes. Known as the ‘astronomy capital of Australia’, it lies beside the Warrumbungle National Park – the country’s only Dark Sky Park – and the Siding Spring Observatory, offering stargazing, bushwalking and strong community spirit. The town provides three schools, several churches, a locally‑run newspaper and radio station, and heritage landmarks such as a sandstone clock tower that add historic charm.
