Dalton is a small inland town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, 255 km southwest of Sydney and 79 km north of Canberra, just north of the Hume Highway. The 2021 census recorded 230 residents, with easy road links to Gunning, Yass and nearby villages, and Oolong Creek runs through the centre.

Dalton now serves as a rural‑residential centre with wide, well‑maintained streets, historic sites such as the 1860 Royal Hotel and St Matthew’s Anglican Church, and essential services including a primary school, post office, petrol station and a lively pub.
