Ellenborough is a small village on the Oxley Highway where the Ellenborough River joins the Hastings River, about 38 km west of Wauchope and 130 km east of Walcha. The surrounding landscape hosts native birds such as bowerbirds and wedge‑tailed eagles, and mammals including kangaroos, koalas and platypus, offering wildlife‑watching opportunities. A camping reserve on the north‑eastern edge provides easy river access for weekend getaways.

While Ellenborough no longer has a school, the nearby Long Flat settlement 4 km east offers a public school, a hotel, a recreation ground and a general store. Heritage sites in the village include the historic cemetery, the old police station and mature trees.
