Girilambone, NSW 2831
Overview
Girilambone is a tiny village in western New South Wales, set 610 km north‑west of Sydney and just north of Nyngan. The 2021 Census recorded only 86 residents, many of whom trace Aboriginal ancestry to the Wangaaypuwan people. A quiet, close‑knit community lives amid a rich copper‑mining heritage, with the name meaning “place of many stars” in the local language.
The settlement consists of the historic government village on the eastern side of the former railway line and remnants of the original private mining town to the west, offering a modest mix of housing built from the late‑1800s onward. Although the railway station closed in 1986, a state‑funded restoration aims to turn the derelict building into a visitor centre and Indigenous art gallery. The Mitchell Highway skirts the older townsite, and the village retains two cemeteries, former churches and a school legacy that together shape everyday life in this remote outback locality.
