Girraween lies 30 km west of the Sydney central business district, within Cumberland Council and the Greater Western Sydney region. Its name, an Aboriginal word meaning “place of flowers,” reflects the area’s original Darug custodians and the legacy of the D’Arcy Wentworth estate. At the 2021 census the suburb hosted 6,256 residents, with a vibrant multicultural community, over a third were born in India and more than three‑quarters speak a language other than English at home.

The suburb is linked by the 705 bus between Blacktown and Parramatta and is a short walk to Pendle Hill and Toongabbie railway stations via Civic Park.
