Lakemba, NSW 2195
Overview
Lakemba is a western Sydney suburb 12 km southwest of the CBD in the City of Canterbury‑Bankstown. It lies in the Cooks River watershed, with a bike‑and‑walking trail linking Belfield to Botany Bay and north to Olympic Park, while Haldon Street offers cafés, international food stalls and the popular Lakemba Nights Ramadan market. Lakemba railway station on the Bankstown line (closed for Metro works until 2025) provides train and bus connections.
In the 2021 Census Lakemba had 17,092 residents; 32 % were born in Australia and the most common ancestries are Bangladeshi and Indian, with 61 % identifying as Muslim and many languages spoken at home. Schools include Lakemba Public, Hampden Park and Holy Spirit College, and a range of churches and mosques serve the multicultural community. Lakemba is known for its affordability, one of few Sydney suburbs where buying is cheaper than renting, and the forthcoming Metro upgrade should spur residential and commercial growth.
