Leichhardt, NSW 2040
Overview
Leichhardt lies 5 km west of Sydney’s CBD and serves as the Inner West Council’s administrative centre. Its vibrant main strip, Norton Street, is lined with Italian‑style restaurants, cafés (including the historic Café Sport), boutiques, the Palace Cinema and two shopping centres – MarketPlace Leichhardt and Norton Plaza. The pedestrian‑only Italian Forum and the annual Italian Fiesta give the suburb a lively Mediterranean feel, while nearby parks such as Pioneers Memorial and War Memorial provide green relief.
Leichhardt enjoys strong transport links: the City West Link (A4) skims its northern edge, several bus routes connect to the CBD and Bondi Junction, and Petersham railway station is an eight‑minute walk from Norton Street. Light Rail stops at Hawthorne, Marion and Taverners Hill serve the western and northern parts. The 2021 census recorded 15,158 residents living in 33.6 % terraces or townhouses, 36.5 % separate houses and 29.0 % apartments.
