Mathoura, NSW 2710
Overview
Mathoura is a small Riverina town in southern New South Wales, administered by the Murray River Council. At the 2021 Census the community numbered 1,002 residents, and its name is thought to come from a Yorta Yorta word meaning “windy”. The township sits on the historic Cobb Highway, the former coach route linking the Murray River to Wilcannia, and retains a rail siding on the original Deniliquin‑Moama line that opened in 1876.
Today the town offers a relaxed, outdoor‑focused lifestyle. Residents can join the local Australian Rules football club competing in the Picola & District League and play at the Mathoura Golf Club, both sited on the Cobb Highway. Walking tracks along Gulpa Creek showcase the striking red‑coloured scarp of the Cadell Fault, while nearby Mathoura Lagoon provides a natural water amenity. Housing ranges from heritage timber cottages that echo the town’s 19th‑century timber trade to more recent homes, giving buyers a variety of options.
