Tathra is a seaside town on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales with a 2016 census population of 1,675. Its 3‑km‑long Tathra Beach fronts the Bega River, while the historic Old Tathra Wharf, the only remaining coastal steamer wharf in the state, offers fishing and leisure access. The town is bounded by Mimosa Rocks National Park to the north and Bournda National Park to the south, providing extensive walking tracks, and it is supported by an active Surf Life Saving Club and a well‑equipped volunteer fire brigade.
Road links connect Tathra Road to Bega (18 km west), the Sapphire Coast Drive to Merimbula (25 km south) and the Tathra‑Bermagui Road to the fishing port of Bermagui (44 km north). Local residents and visitors travel on the Sapphire Coast Bus Lines service. After the 2018 bushfires, many homes were rebuilt, giving the community a varied housing stock set within a coastal lifestyle of beach, park and heritage amenities.
