Thurgoona sits on the north‑east edge of Albury, just east of the Hume Freeway, giving residents quick access to the Hume and Riverina Highways and the Albury CBD. The suburb expanded rapidly from the late‑1970s through the 1980s, with new residential estates such as St Johns Hill, St Jones Green and Thurgoona Park creating a diverse housing mix. At the 2021 Census the population was 11,028, with a median age of 34 and a median weekly household income of $1,953, comfortably above the national average.

The suburb also features a 18‑hole golf club, an Australian Rules football team, an industrial park near the airport, and extensive Box Gum grassy woodlands that support over 100 bird species and threatened wildlife such as the squirrel glider.
