Overview
Alyangula, the largest township on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, was built in the late 1960s as a residence for Groote Eylandt Mining Company staff. The community enjoys a resort‑style lifestyle with a first‑class resort, four clubs, an arts centre, a coffee shop, a golf course, a 25 m swimming pool and a range of sporting facilities, plus a church, several shops, a bank, post office and travel agency.
According to the 2021 census the town is home to 751 people, almost all employed by GEMCO. Housing is centred around the mining workforce and is complemented by a school up to Year 11, child‑care and training centres, an area health centre, a court house and a police station. Fuel is subsidised to become the cheapest in Australia, and the presence of a travel agency provides connections for residents and visitors.
Region type mix: Remote 99%, Metro 1%.
