Overview

Nhulunbuy is a private mining town on Aboriginal‑owned land in far‑north Northern Territory, with 3,350 residents recorded in the 2021 Census. East Arnhem Regional Council provides aged‑care, childcare, youth sport programmes and health services centred on Gove District Hospital and community clinics. The suburb hosts three schools – Nhulunbuy Primary, Nhulunbuy High (with a $20 million boarding facility) and Nhulunbuy Christian College – and easy access to the town beach, Middle Beach volleyball area, fishing at Cape Wirrawoi and the Roy Marika Lookout on Mount Saunders.

Most supplies and visitors arrive via Gove Airport or by sea, with regular Darwin flights despite reduced loads after the 2014 refinery shutdown. Housing, originally built for refinery workers, now offers a mix of dwellings for families, retirees and students, while a Woolworths supermarket remains until mid‑2027. The town’s layout backs onto the 200 m Mount Saunders, providing coastal living and quick access to Yirrkala, 18 km south.
