The Gardens is an inner‑city suburb of Darwin, set on the traditional country and waterways of the Larrakia people. Its name comes from the nearby George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, a historic green space that began under curator Maurice Holtze in 1878 and now boasts one of the region’s largest collections of palms, giving residents easy access to shaded walks, garden tours and a relaxed, nature‑focused lifestyle just minutes from the urban core.

The suburb’s residential pocket grew out of a small area once called Palmerston Gardens in 1968 before being officially named The Gardens in 1984.
