Baralaba, QLD 4702
Overview
Baralaba is a rural town in the Shire of Banana, central Queensland, with a population of 324 people in the 2021 census. It sits on the north‑west corner of its locality beside the Dawson River, where the Neville Hewitt weir expands the waterway for irrigation and recreation. The town lies about 33 km west of the Leichhardt Highway, giving road access to surrounding districts. The local economy is based on beef production and, more recently, coal mining, drawing farming families and mining workers.
Baralaba State School provides education from Prep to Year 10, while a fortnightly mobile library and two churches support community life. A 9‑hole golf course, March campdraft, May agricultural show and September fishing competition give residents leisure options, and the river and weir encourage outdoor recreation.
