Castlereagh Highway runs through St George, the administrative centre of the Balonne Shire with a 2021 population of 3,130, and joins the junction of the Moonie, Carnarvon and Balonne highways that connect the town to the wider South West Queensland region. The road follows the historic township layout set when the first 59 parcels of land were offered for sale in 1864, now bordered by the town’s residential dwellings.

Education and civic services are centred on Victoria Street, where the state school, council library and the Queensland Country Women’s Association rooms serve local residents.
