St George is the administrative hub of the Shire of Balonne in South West Queensland, sitting on the Balonne River at the crossroads of the Castlereagh, Moonie, Carnarvon and Balonne Highways. The 2021 census recorded 3 130 residents, many of whom enjoy the town’s riverside fishing for yellowbelly and Murray cod and a strong agricultural base that includes cotton, wheat, sheep and a variety of vegetables.
