St George is the administrative centre of the Shire of Balonne in South West Queensland, 513 km west of Brisbane. At the 2021 census the town recorded 3,130 residents. Situated on the Balonne River, it offers excellent yellowbelly and Murray Cod fishing, and a hot semi‑arid climate with 173 clear days a year, which encourages outdoor activities such as the annual St George Show over the Labour Day weekend.
Residents enjoy a range of amenities including a visitor information centre, cultural centre, swimming pool, bowling green, golf club and a library run by the Balonne Shire Council. The town is a transport hub at the junction of the Castlereagh, Moonie, Carnarvon and Balonne highways, with the Andrew Nixon Bridge providing the only Balonne River crossing and a local airport serving regional flights. Education is provided by St George State School, St George State High School and St Patrick’s Catholic School, supporting families across the community.
