Sunnybank Hills is located about 17 kilometres (11 mi) south of Brisbane’s central business district. The suburb offers a suburban lifestyle while still being within easy reach of the city.

The area is well‑served by frequent bus services that run directly to the city during peak periods. Train stations such as Sunnybank, Altandi and Banoon (approximately 0.8 km away) also provide regular rail connections to Brisbane and Beenleigh.

Residents can shop at Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown, which hosts Woolworths, Coles, K Mart, Aldi, a library and numerous specialty stores. Additional options include Shauna Downs and Centro Pinelands, both a short drive away.

Sunnybank Hills features many parks and green pockets, with the suburb’s ridges and hills offering natural walking and recreation areas. The landscape includes several small creeks and wetlands that add to the local scenery.

In the 2021 census the suburb had a population of 18,085, with about a third (32.3 %) describing their ancestry as Chinese. The community is multicultural, with significant numbers of residents born in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The Brisbane City Council operates a public library in the Sunnybank Hills Shopping Centre, providing books, internet access and community programs. The suburb also hosts several churches offering services in multiple languages.

Approximately 85 % of dwellings in the area are stand‑alone houses, with the remainder mainly being townhouses. The housing stock is largely modern brick and tile construction.
