Tanah Merah was originally part of Slacks Creek and was officially named by the Queensland Place Names Board in 1971. The population expanded significantly after a housing estate was developed west of Drews Road between 2001 and 2006.
In the 2021 census, Tanah Merah had about 4,754 residents with a median age of 37, just slightly below the national median. Approximately 70 % of residents were born in Australia, with the remainder representing a variety of other countries.
