The Gap is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) by road north‑west of the Brisbane GPO. This makes the property roughly a 15‑20 minute drive into the city centre under normal traffic conditions.
Enoggera Reservoir and the adjacent Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre are within 1–2 km, offering water‑based recreation, bushwalking and mountain biking. The suburb also backs onto the southern part of D’Aguilar National Park, providing extensive trail networks and wildlife viewing.
The Gap is well served by a good public bus network that runs along Waterworks Road, the main arterial road through the area. Waterworks Road also connects west to Red Hill and east to Brisbane city, giving easy road access for private vehicles.
The Gap Village shopping village offers local retail and services, and a police station is located at 965 Waterworks Rd. A Queensland Fire & Rescue Station, an ambulance station and a fortnightly mobile library service are also in close proximity.
According to the 2021 census, The Gap had a population of 17,318 people. The suburb has shown modest growth from the 2016 figure of 16,692.
The area was originally heavily forested and later developed through timber felling and farming after European settlement in the 1850s. A significant microburst storm in November 2008 caused extensive tree loss and damage to homes in the suburb.
Local FM stations include Nova 106.9, 4EB, 4MBS, 4ZZZ, 96five Family FM and 98.9 FM. Television services such as TVQ and radio broadcasters like Triple M Brisbane 104.5 are also available within the area.
