The Gap is positioned about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) by road north‑west of the Brisbane GPO, so the property is roughly that distance from the city centre. The drive follows Waterworks Road which becomes Musgrave Road into Brisbane.

The suburb offers more than 45 parks, numerous sporting clubs and the Ashgrove Golf Club. Within 1–2 km you can reach Enoggera Reservoir and Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre for fishing, kayaking, stand‑up paddling, bushwalking and mountain biking.

Enoggera Reservoir lies about 0.9 km away and Enoggera Dam is roughly 1.1 km from the house. Both lakes provide opportunities for water‑based recreation and are set against the surrounding bushland.

The Gap is well served by a frequent bus network that runs along Waterworks Road, linking the suburb to Brisbane city and neighboring areas. The main arterial road also provides easy access for private vehicles.

The Gap was originally inhabited by the Turrbal people and later became a timber‑felling and farming area after European settlement. Named for the valley between Mount Coot‑tha and Enoggera Hill, it saw its first crown lease in 1851 and grew from a series of track‑based accesses into the residential suburb it is today.

The Gap Village shopping village offers local retail and services, and a police station is located at 965 Waterworks Road. A Queensland Fire & Rescue Station and a fortnightly mobile library service also serve residents of the area.
