It is situated in The Gap, a north‑western suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. The Gap lies about 10 km (6 mi) north‑west of the Brisbane GPO by road.
Enoggera Reservoir and Enoggera Dam are both within 2–3 km, offering fishing, canoeing and paddle‑craft launches. Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre and the southern entrance to D’Aguilar National Park are also nearby for bushwalking and wildlife spotting.
The suburb has over 45 parks with playgrounds, barbeques and dog off‑leash areas, plus many sporting clubs for soccer, tennis, athletics and swimming. Ashgrove Golf Club and extensive bush‑walking and mountain‑biking trails are also easily accessed.
Waterworks Road is the main arterial road running through The Gap and connects directly to Brisbane via Musgrave Road. The area is also served by a good public bus network.
The Gap Village shopping precinct, a local police station on Waterworks Road, a Queensland Fire & Rescue station, and an ambulance station are all within a short drive. The Brisbane City Council’s mobile library visits the sports ground at the end of Glenaffric Street fortnightly.
Originally inhabited by the Turrbal people, the area was heavily forested and later cleared for timber and farming after European settlement. The name comes from its position in the valley between Mount Coot‑tha and Enoggera Hill.
The Gap War Memorial at Walton Bridge Reserve is a local landmark. The suburb was also impacted by the major microburst storm on 16 November 2008, which caused extensive tree damage.
