Simpson Falls is about 1‑2 km away, and the Enoggera Reservoir and Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre are nearby, offering walking, canoeing and wildlife experiences.
The Gap Village shopping centre, the local police station on Waterworks Road, a Queensland Fire & Rescue station and an ambulance station are all within a few kilometres of the house.
The suburb is well served by a regular bus network, and the main arterial Waterworks Road provides direct road access to Brisbane city via Ashgrove and Red Hill.
In November 2008, a microburst caused major storms in The Gap, bringing high winds that damaged trees, roofs and roads within the suburb.
According to the 2021 census, The Gap had a population of 17,318 residents.
The name comes from its position in the valley between Mount Coot‑tha and Enoggera Hill, literally the ‘gap’ between the hills that form part of the Taylor Range.
