Thursday Island (TI, Waiben) sits 39 km north of Cape York Peninsula and spans 3.5 km². In the 2021 census the locality housed 2,805 residents, 69.1 % of whom identify as Indigenous Australians. A tropical savanna climate gives hot, dry winters and a wet season from December to April, supporting an active outdoor lifestyle centred on the sporting complex, gym, ANZAC Park and Ken Brown Oval. Everyday needs are met by a community pharmacy, general store, butcher, bank and a modern public library opened in 2015.

The island is a transport hub, with Ports North operating a wharf, an airport and a regular ferry link to neighbouring Horn Island.
