Thursday Island (Waiben) sits 39 km north of Cape York on a 3.5 km² coral‑capped isle in the Torres Strait. In the 2021 Census the locality recorded 2,805 residents, a community shaped by a historic pearling trade that left a vibrant multicultural heritage still evident in local festivals and the island’s many heritage‑listed sites, such as Green Hill Fort and the Quetta Memorial Precinct. Daily life is supported by a sporting complex, gym, ANZAC Park, public library, pharmacy, general store, butcher, bank and the regional hospital and courts, while the area hospital, courts and government offices make the island the administrative hub for the Shire of Torres.
