Queensland’s 2021 estimated population of 5.27 million is heavily concentrated in South‑East Queensland, where more than 70 % of residents live and roughly half of the state’s people call Brisbane home; this urban core is flanked by other major cities such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville and Cairns, while regional centres and vast inland areas provide a contrasting mix of detached homes and low‑density dwellings.

The state ranks third nationally in gross state product, driven by mining, agriculture, transport, international education, insurance and banking, with tourism also a major contributor; the combination of a strong, diversified economy and the highest inter‑state net migration in Australia sustains a vigorous rental market and influences housing affordability across both city and regional locations.
