Birdwood, SA 5234
Overview
Birdwood sits 44 km east of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills, at the crossroads of the Adelaide‑Mannum Road, the route to Williamstown and the Barossa Valley, and the road to Lobethal and the South Eastern Freeway. The town provides a small‑town lifestyle with a primary school (opened 1878), Birdwood High School (over 700 students), a supermarket, two coffee‑bakeries, antique shops, a motel, a petrol station and the National Motor Museum, which hosts the annual Bay to Birdwood vintage‑vehicle run. Local churches include Roman Catholic, Lutheran, United and Seventh‑day Adventist, and nearby Cromer Conservation Park offers a natural birdwatching habitat.
Adelaide Metro does not serve Birdwood, but LinkSA operates a coach between Tea Tree Plaza, Gumeracha and Mount Pleasant. The Adelaide‑Mannum Road carries heavy through traffic, marked by safety posts at historic accident sites. The former Mount Pleasant railway line closed in 1963, leaving only earthworks as a reminder.
