Birkenhead is a north‑western Adelaide suburb on the Lefevre Peninsula, 14 km from the CBD and situated within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. Primarily residential, the area is framed by the Gawler Reach of the Port River to the south and a mix of industrial harbourside sites, including the Adelaide Brighton Cement works and a Shell Oil berth, along its eastern fringe. Heritage landmarks such as the historic Birkenhead Bridge and the former HMAS Encounter Naval Drill Hall add character, while the newer Tom “Diver” Derrick Bridge, opened in 2008, eases local traffic.
