Cambrai sits on the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges, set beside the River Marne. The town, originally called Rhine Villa, was renamed during World I after the Battle of Cambrai. It lies on the former Sedan railway line and operated as the line’s terminus from 1964 until the 1980s, providing historic rail connectivity for residents.

The bounded locality includes the former settlement of Rheinthal, about 3 km north, where a Lutheran church once served the community and a school operated until 1955.
