Canowie Belt, SA 5420
Overview
Canowie Belt is a rural locality in South Australia’s Mid North, governed by two regional councils. The name was formalised in August 2000, deriving from the Aboriginal word “Kanya‑owie” meaning ‘rock waterhole’, and reflects the area’s historic connection to the Canowie Station pastoral lease.
Although small, the community once featured essential services: a school opened as Yongala Blocks in 1904 (closed 1967), a post office operating from 1902 to 1946, and a Baptist church established in 1904 that later closed. The Canowie Belt Hall, opened in July 1909, remains a landmark for local gatherings, contributing to the quiet, country lifestyle valued by residents.
