Greenwith was named in 1846 by Thomas Roberts after his Cornish mining property. The area was developed for housing from the mid‑1980s after land acquisition by the South Australian Land Commission, and its boundaries were expanded in 2017 when part of Salisbury Heights was renamed Greenwith.
