Greenwith was named in 1846 after a property owned by Thomas Roberts and later by John Garfield Tilley. The land was acquired for housing by the South Australian Land Commission in 1973, with development beginning in 1985, and the suburb’s boundaries were expanded in 2017.

During off‑peak periods, local services run about once an hour, and the last bus generally departs around 3 pm.
