Henley Beach was named after Henley-on-Thames in England. The land was first granted to William Bartley in 1850, later sold to James Macgeorge in 1873, and in 1877 Arthur Harvey, Henry S. Anthony and William P. Wicksteed acquired it to develop the town. Early growth was limited by road access, but council and private efforts later improved the area.
The property falls within the City of Charles Sturt, specifically the Henley Ward. It is represented on the council by Kenzie Van den Nieuwelaar and Paul Sykes.
Henley Beach is serviced by Adelaide Metro bus routes that connect to the city centre and Glenelg. The nearest railway stations are Marlborough Street (about 0.6 km away) and Henley Beach railway station (approximately 1.4 km away).
Henley Square, located behind Henley Jetty on the Esplanade, provides a waterfront green space. Additional parks include the Henley Grange Memorial Oval and John Mitchell Oval, and the suburb’s beach stretches along the coast for leisure activities.
Within a short walk you’ll find the Ramsgate Hotel by Nightcap Social (about 0.1 km) and the Marine Discovery Centre (around 0.5 km). The former Odeon cinema is also nearby, roughly 0.2 km away.
The suburb of Henley Beach lies in the state electoral district of Colton and the federal division of Hindmarsh.
