Native animals include kangaroos, blue‑tongue lizards, Australian white ibis, red‑bellied black snakes and barn owls, while introduced species such as cattle, European rabbits and red foxes are also present across the island.

Mains electricity was connected to the island in 1965, so most areas can be serviced by the public grid. Additionally, a Telstra telephone tower in Alberto Forest provides mobile phone coverage.

The Hindmarsh Island Bridge links the island to Goolwa on the mainland, providing a sealed road connection. The bridge is 319 m long and the island is about 100 km (≈1 hour‑15 minutes) south‑east of Adelaide.

Key points of interest include the Hindmarsh Island Sturt Monument (≈0.7 km), Narnu Bay (≈0.8 km), several boat ramps along the shoreline, the Hindmarsh Island Caravan Park, and the Currency Creek Game Reserve (≈2.2 km).

Given its history of grazing, proximity to tourist facilities, and inclusion in the Ramsar wetland, land can be used for agriculture (e.g., cattle or sheep), eco‑tourism ventures, or conservation‑focused projects compatible with the island’s protected status.

The island experiences a Mediterranean climate similar to Adelaide, with hot, dry summers and mild, cool winters, making it suitable for a range of outdoor activities throughout the year.
