Leighton, SA 5417
Overview
Leighton is a quiet rural locality in South Australia’s Mid North, governed by the Regional Council of Goyder. Established formally in August 2000, the area traces its origins to the private subdivision of Bald by, first auctioned in January 1875, and was later renamed after an early settler family. The community once hosted a post office (1877‑1920), a Wesleyan church from the 1870s, a school (1880‑1989) and a hall (1909‑2003), reflecting a modest but active village life that included a cricket club (from 1929) and a short‑lived golf club (1932‑1941).
Today the locality is primarily zoned for primary production, with most land used for agriculture and a small portion for livestock grazing. This land‑use focus supports a lifestyle centred on farming and open‑space living, while the preserved World War I honour roll at the Booborowie Institute connects residents to Leighton’s historic community spirit.
