Overview

Lock sits at the geographic centre of the Eyre Peninsula, serving as the main grain‑storage hub for the surrounding cereal‑crop farms. It lies at the junction of the Tod Highway, which runs the length of the peninsula, and the Birdseye Highway, offering direct road links to coastal towns. A railway siding arrived in 1913 and the town was gazetted in 1918. The 2006 census recorded 290 residents, most of whom were Australian‑born.
