Milang sits on the west coast of Lake Alexandrina, about 71 km south‑east of Adelaide and 20 km north‑east of Goolwa. According to the 2021 Census the town is home to 831 residents who enjoy a lakeside lifestyle that includes fishing from the heritage‑listed jetty, boating, swimming and exploring the Milang Historical Walk. Heritage buildings such as the 1867 Royal Salute cannon in Soldiers Memorial Park, the former butter factory and the pressed‑iron façade dwelling add a historic charm, while community facilities include the Milang Historical Society museum, the Milang Railway Museum and the Milang Panthers football club.
Although the original 13.1 km railway branch closed in 1970, the former station now hosts the Milang Railway Museum and the South Australian Light Railway Centre, preserving the town’s transport legacy. Road links connect Milang to Adelaide and Goolwa, and the housing stock reflects a mix of 19th‑century heritage homes and more recent dwellings built within the town’s scenic lakeside setting.
