Murray Town is a small locality set in the Mid North of South Australia, just east of the lower Flinders Ranges. Established in 1883, the town originally served as a rest stop for bullock and horse teams moving grain toward Port Germein, reflecting its deep agricultural roots. It was named after Alexander Murray, the pioneer who introduced the Murray Merino sheep breed to the region.

Today the settlement retains a quiet, rural lifestyle. The once‑popular annual spring Murray Town Auction ran until 2016, and the historic hotel that appears on maps has been closed for many years, underscoring the town’s shift away from commercial activity. Nearby natural features include Pine Creek and the Doughboy Creek weather station, both within a few kilometres, offering a sense of open‑country living.
