Overview

Springton is a historic settlement in South Australia, named after the original Springs Dairy that pre‑dated the town’s survey. The community is anchored by the iconic Herbig Family Tree, a hollow red gum that served as Friedrich Herbig’s first home after his 1855 arrival from Germany, where his first two children were born before a nearby hut was built in 1860. This unique heritage landmark, alongside the former village of Friedensberg just under two kilometres south, adds a distinctive rural charm. Friedensberg’s former Lutheran church, school and cemetery have been preserved as a museum, offering a tangible glimpse of the area’s 19th‑century pioneer life, including the influential Polden family who settled in the region from the 1840s.
